Classroom Guidance Lessons
Classroom lessons are designed to meet the developmental needs of all students. They focus on character education and skill building to enhance students' learning and interactions with others. The three domains that classroom lessons focus on are: Academic, Personal/Social, and Career. These domains are chosen and supported by ASCA, or the American School Counselor Association. Students nation-wide receive lessons in these areas, and all of Ms. Ruhland's students will receive these lessons.
3rd Grade Curriculum
In 3rd grade, we use a few different curriculums throughout the year. We begin the year with Kelso's Choice, a conflict management skills kit. Then we continue with the Second Step Bullying Prevention unit. Our second unit of study uses the Second Step 4th grade curriculum, which focuses on Empathy and Skills for Learning. Our final unit of study is Intro to Careers.
4th Grade Curriculum
4th grade begins the year with a review of K.C.'s Choice (4th grade version of Kelso) followed by the Second Step Bullying Prevention unit. We then continue the Second Step 4th grade curriculum where we left off in 3rd grade. This unit of study is Problem Solving. The third Lifeskills unit for 4th grade is Emotion Management, and we end the year with Career Exploration.
5th Grade Curriculum
The final year of Lifeskills begins with a short review of K.C.'s Choice and the Second Step Bullying Prevention unit. We also talk about Ally responsibility and stereotypes. Our second unit of study is Personal Safety. We follow that with the Second Step 5th grade curriculum and focus on Empathy and Skills for Learning. Our final unit of study at WIS is Career Investigation.
